PSHSA's Emergency Response for Workplace Violence (Code White) in the Healthcare Sector Toolkit

PSHSA's Emergency Response for Workplace Violence (Code White) in the Healthcare Sector Toolkit

Basics

Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act employers are required to develop and implement measures and procedures to summon immediate assistance when workplace violence occurs or is likely to occur; and to develop a policy and program with respect to workplace violence. An important measure and procedure is a formal emergency response to workplace violence, also known as Code White in some healthcare workplaces. Code White is used to alert workers to a real or perceived threat of violence, which includes aggressive or responsive behaviours. Code White procedures also ensure that there is standardization and consistency in the response to workplace violence. Everyone in the workplace needs to know their emergency response measures and procedures to workplace violence.
